We Faceted this Icosahedron 20 sided dice from Black Jade

Various games use the 20 sided dice. We have cut several of these for folks in the past few years as those games have gotten more popular.

Some players have decided they wanted a very special dice made from a gemstone material. Black Jade works very well because it is a very hard material.

Sample dice

This is the plastic sample dice which they sent us to copy.

Rough Black Jade to be used

This is the chunk of rough Black Jade which we will use to cut the dice.

Block preform

Here you can see how we have sawed the rough Black Jade into a cube of the correct size.

The customer wants the new dice to be slightly larger than their sample dice.

Duplicating the shape

The first step in duplicating the shape is to wax the sample to a dop stock and put it in our faceting machine.

We record the angles and indexes for each of the faces.

We are then able to use the same angles and indexes to make the new piece.

Starting the faceting

When starting the faceting, there is a lot of bulk material to be removed. This can take some time with a new sharp diamond wheel.

Faceting the Black Jade

You can see how the complex geometric pattern is developing.

We have to be very careful to get the size of each facet just right.

Finished Black Jade dice

This diec is pretty cool when it is finished.

You just can't help but want to roll the thing around !

Another view

This is just a slithgly different view of the piece.

The customer was very happy with her dice!
