Re-faceting Rubies into cushion cuts

A jeweler was designing a piece of jewelery for one of his customers. His customer wanted cushion cut Rubies.

It as very hard to find matching cushion cut Rubies but he could find ovals.

He asked me if I could recut them into cushions with minimal weight loss.

Shows me holding 2 oval Rubies which are on dop sticks.

I have glued 2 of the oval Rubies onto dop sticks prior to cutting.

Re-faceting the pavilion

After the oval has been re-shaped into a cushion, I need to place a new facet pattern on the Ruby.

In placing the new facets on the pavilion, I alter the angles in a manner which will close the window on this stone as much as possible.

I won't be able to completely close the window because there isn't quite enough total thickness from girdle to culet on this stone.

3 cushion Rubies now finished

This shows the 3 finished cushion Rubies. One stane is larger and the other 2 are matching.

With the new facets which have a high polish and more symmetrical cuts than before, they are a bit more brilliant than they were before I re-faceted them.
