Cutting a large Lapis cabochon

A creative jeweler on the east coast had an application which required a very large Lapis cabochon which also needed to be dished out on the underside.

He wanted a Lapis cab that was 3 inches across and an inch and a half tall.

I found a nice solid piece of Lapis rough that would work for this project.

Photo shows me with a vary large Lapis cabochon cutting it on my lapping machine.

I normally hold cabochons on a dop stick but in this case, because it is so large, I can actually cut it without a dop stick.

In this photo you can see how we dished out the back side of the large cab.

I think the jewelry designer had said he was going to mount this on top of a jewelry box and needed the bottom dished out for a particular reason.
